" ... American artist Raymond Pettibon has had a fascinating rise through the ranks of art world hierarchy. For many of us that grew up on punk rock, Pettibon's graphic work for his big brother Greg Ginn's (guitarist of LA hardcore punk icons Black Flag) record label SST records was our earliest exposure to visual art of any kind. Now represented by David Zwirner, Pettibon is undeniably one of the most important and famous contemporary artists in the world. Pettibon's drawings unravel contemporary history through their unique interplay between image and text. Since the late 1960s, Pettibon has explored the failure of the American counter-culture (and some of the manifestations of that failure: Charles Manson, Ronald Reagan, and Superman) all while playing a pivotal role in some of its key movements: from punk rock to identity politics and everything in-between. Almost shockingly, Pettibon has never been the subject of a major retrospective in New York before. This February, The New Museum will present over 700 drawings from the 1960s to the present, a number of his self-produced zines and books, and several videos made with fellow musicians and artist friends (check out Sir Drone directed by Pettibon and starring the late Mike Kelley and Mike Watt of The Minutemen). ... " ... Many of the zines in the most recent collection are short unofficial supplements for 5e. Other support other indie RPGs, like the death metal fantasy of MORK BORG or the space survival horror of Mothership. Many more are small games meant to be played in a session or two. Most of these games are available for a small pledge between $5 and $10, so even if they disappoint, it’s easy to move on to the next one. ... "
" ... Tell us about your background? I moved from Connecticut to South Florida in middle school. I painted graffiti all through high school and was introduced to graphic design during my senior year. I started making local skate zines by taping drawings and photos together, photocopying them and distributing them to local shops. Once I got my hands on an old computer, I started using the line and fill tools in Microsoft Paint to create digital pieces. The internet had just become accessible in the suburbs via AOL dial-up. I'd share graffiti flicks, scanned drawings, and digital creations globally to other artists via graffiti message boards. When they released the iMac bubble, the game changed and I got deeper into graphic design. This led me to study it at Florida State University. After graduating with a degree in Studio Art I moved north to Atlanta, GA to pursue my career. ... "
" ... Zatko is not your typical Department of Defense employee. Even in his new Beltway digs, he prefers to be called “Mudge,” the hacker handle he used during decades of exploring the dark corners of the Internet. Frank Heidt, a former security staffer at MCI and several military contractors, says that when he first read Zatko’s exploit research in mid-1990s hacker zines, he thought that Mudge must be the pseudonym of a group. “He was so prolific that I thought he couldn’t be one person,” Heidt says. In 1998, as part of the L0pht hacker think tank, Zatko testified in a congressional hearing that he and his friends could shut down the Internet in 30 minutes. ... "
