" ... I arrived early on a Thursday at DaimlerChrysler’s German HQ in Stuttgart where I was greeted by one of my American colleagues who was on a six-month stint there. She told me an important meeting was about to start and I might enjoy it. Ach! It would all happen in German, so she politely asked the leader if he wouldn’t mind, this once, conducting the meeting in English for the benefit of an American colleague who was visiting. Being the welcoming volks they are, the leader listened to her pitch, stared intently and spat out a fairly convincing, “NO!” So much for that good old concept of melding of cultures. I had taken five years of German when I was a school kid, and while I had forgotten most of it, I did remember the catchy phrase, “Sie sollen in die Teufel gehen,” which is a long way of saying, “go to the devil!” I didn’t actually say that aloud but I was comforted in knowing I could totally diss a Deutche in Teutonic terms. Of course, had the conditions been reversed we would not necessarily have been able to accomodate a German colleague visiting us in Michigan because many Americans basically speak two languages--English and emoji. In all fairness, several of my co-workers who found themselves shuttling between the two countries did become fairly conversant in German. ... "
