" ... The column resulted in a negative comment from a reader. The comment was understandable, and my experience in such matters had prepared me for it. In brief, the public is naturally prone to commit the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy. The commenter wrote me to tell me that her diabetic husband had taken Actos and had subsequently been diagnosed with bladder cancer. It followed, to her, that Actos had caused his bladder cancer. The commenter concluded that I “owe all plaintiffs an apology for not having [my] facts straight!!!” Of course, I appreciate the commenter’s grief; I too have lost loved ones to cancer. But I did get my facts straight, and the commenter’s claim is not logically true any more than it would be logically true that the Cheerios her husband had (hypothetically) consumed caused his cancer. ...
