" ... “Into The Woods” on its surface would seem the easiest of Broadway properties to translate into cinematic commercial success. In addition to the sublime Sondheim as its creator (along with librettist James Lapine), the musical revolves around a series of universally known fairy tales from Cinderella to Little Red Riding Hood to Jack and the beanstalk. But this is hardly a kiddie show. It includes (spoiler alert) betrayal, implicit pedophilia, infertility, adultery, and multiple deaths including those of a parent (which is, I guess, kind of Disneyish – see, e.g., “Bambi”). Rob Marshall, the film’s director (with a previous Broadway on film triumph with “Chicago”) skillfully weaves in both child-like fantasy and adult reality with equal parts comedy and tragedy. The music and lyrics, the heart of any Broadway musical, are if anything even more center stage than they are in live theater. Marshall takes full advantage of the film medium’s ability to provide both gorgeous visual tableaux and intense close-ups that illuminate each rhyming syllable. There are a group of wonderful and often surprising performances, including Chris Pine as a beautifully voiced, hilariously vain yet still human Prince Charming, James Corden and Emily Blunt as a couple desperately hoping for a child (with Blunt’s voice a particular revelation), and Johnny Depp as a rakish wolf in, well, wolf’s clothing. And, oh yes, Meryl Streep adds about the 412th consecutive amazing performance to her resume. It is all entirely true to its source, and yet a fresh new work at the same time. ... "
