" ... “Kimono” literally means “something to wear”. The term came to describe traditional Japanese clothing from the 19th century, in opposition to Western clothing, which became fashionable at the time. Previously, it was known as kosode (“small sleeves”) referring to the small openings of the sleeves at the cuffs. The origins of the kimono date back to the 7th century, when a dress inspired from China was introduced to Japan. The shape of kimonos stayed almost unaltered for centuries. Basically, it is made of two lengths of cloth sewn together vertically in the center back and left open in the center front, with additional widths on each side of the body to form the sleeves. The neckline is underlined by a collar strip, while extra narrow bands are added on each side of the front opening in order to form overlapping panels. These are always closed on the wearer’s right side and secured by a sash called an obi. This perfectly flat construction, with no folds or darts, made kimonos appropriate for the development of a pictorial decor, often found on the back. The kimono is still very important in Japanese lives today. It is worn for special occasions: weddings, coming-of-age or birthday parties, festivals and tea ceremonies. Wearing a kimono is considered an artful custom to the extent that schools dedicated to the learning of kimono tradition, culture and dressing techniques have been established.
