" ... It’s really other people’s feedback that turns out to be important. There’s this brilliant research by Justin Berg, one of our former doctoral students who’s now on the Stanford faculty. Justin got circus artists to try to gauge how likely their performances were to succeed with audiences. They were terrible. They overestimated the success of their own performances by a lot. So then he went to managers, and he showed a bunch of videos. So you get to see some jugglers, you get to see a few clowns. By the way, nobody likes clowns, it turns out. Universally hated. You may get to watch a few aerial acrobatics performances. Then the managers make judgments. The managers are not very accurate, either. You tend to be too positive on your own ideas. Managers tend to be more negative on other people’s ideas because they have a prototype about what a great circus performance looks like. They are evaluating all the ideas that come onto the table in terms of, “Does that fit or not?” The group that was much more effective than either people themselves or managers was peers: fellow circus artists. So you might not be able to judge your own ideas, but you’re great at forecasting the success of other people’s ideas. ... "
" ... KC: We didn’t have a lot of money when I was a kid, so eating out was always a birthday reward. As a Colorado native, there is one restaurant that I will always remember going to, Casa Bonita! Casa Bonita is basically a cross between a restaurant and an amusement park. The 60,000 sq foot restaurant was complete with an arcade, fire jugglers, a giant gorilla running around scaring people and a 30-foot waterfall that people would dive off of while you ate your meal. Full disclosure, I’ve gone back as an adult and the food doesn’t exactly live up to the nostalgia, but it was always such a unique experience that I loved it as a kid. Plus, unlimited sopapillas! ... " ... Like the best immersive theater, Carmen sets up the space and mood, and then lets everyone choose the night they experience. Guests descend down the stairs at the Public Arts (inside Ian Schrager's Public hotel) and find themselves inside a Cuban nightclub. A live band is in full swing, and a raised dance stage is in the center of the room. Reserve a front row table, order your drinks, and watch an amazing assortment of dancers and other performers: jugglers, contortionists and a sensuous couple that likes shooting crossbows at each other. Up for some intrigue? Leave your table and follow cast members to different spaces over the club's two floors, where you may see an act of betrayal in Carmen's intimate quarters, or a fight between Don José and Escamillo at the bar. And wherever you are — you can always just dance. ... "
" ... There's a great quote from Dallas Mavericks owner (or, as most know him, Shark Tank investor) Mark Cuban. "Work like there is someone working 24 hours a day to take it all away from you." I absolutely love that quote because that's how I approach just about everything. Right, wrong or indifferent — I have always worked as though the rug could get swept out at any moment. It makes me hungry and makes me keep pushing. As communicators, we are a lot of things: We are jugglers, we are Dr. Phil one minute and problem-solvers the next, we are heart-breakers, we are voices of reason — and sometimes, we are a shoulder to cry on. ... " ... You might be reading this and saying to yourself it seems so obvious, just jump on the web and order it online. I could even choose when and where to have it delivered. Perhaps, even within a few hours. All of that at the lowest price, highest quality, best peer review and after viewing videos of “expert” jugglers who suggest what they like…and on and on and on. ...
