" ... I first covered an NBA game in 1992 between the Milwaukee Bucks and the New York Knicks, and things were different back in those days. Media members actually sat on press row (those seats are now sold to season ticket holders), and you were so close to the action that you could listen to the coaches and the referees, and peer into the opposing huddles. Nowadays, media members are seated in the rafters, and there is less and less original reporting. At Forbes.com, we are endeavoring to change that. There is a right way and a wrong way to cover basketball, and we are choosing the former. ... "
" ... In our case we were a small group working at a client site on an important project. Since we individually were often pulled in different directions throughout the day and seemed to have less and less time for the traditional 1-2 hour meetings, we decided to try doing quick daily hallway huddles instead. We instituted a daily morning huddle from 7:45-8:00 down the hall from our cubes. During this 15 minute huddle, there was no fluff, no process, just a quick round robin of key updates that we all needed to know to stay abreast of the project status. We didn’t provide a lot of background information (we didn’t need to since we were just providing updates since the day before). Since we couldn’t afford the luxury of rambling, we tended to cut to the chase instinctively. We adopted a ground rule of using a raised hand (from anyone) to signify when we needed to “net it out” and decide how to move forward instead of continuing the discussion. We didn’t take formal notes; instead, each person was asked to bring their note pad and document their own action items and next steps. We would typically use the final minute or so having each person read back their documented action items/next steps to ensure we were all on the same page before disbanding. Since it was a daily huddle, everyone didn’t necessarily have updates every day, but everyone stayed in the loop on the entire project and that was priceless. After just a couple months we noticed impressive benefits overall. ... "
" ... Just like Ingram’s bench talk in the preseason, once Van Gundy pounded the beat of his constant defensive drum into the team during the first half huddles, New Orleans hit their stride. The 24 turnovers could have doomed them to defeat but hitting 7/14 shots from three-point range, limiting fouls, and dominating the rebound stats kept the Pelicans within seven points. They were close enough to steal a road victory as underdogs. This team with a point to prove had an opportunity early in the season. Having shaken off the rust and feeling a renewed energy at halftime, the Pelicans won the third quarter 38-22 and kept a comfortable lead to seal the victory. ... "

" ... Rely on managers to manage. In our company, we have partners who are responsible for their own teams — and the way they manage varies. Some do daily 10-minute virtual team huddles, while others meet every other day. One thing that makes these touch-base meetings work whenever they’re held is the consistency of each agenda. First, we review metrics and quarterly goals, and then we leave time for open questions from team members. ... "
