" ... But in 2016, several mainstream bike makers took the ebike plunge and a more thoughtful symbiosis of design and electrical components began to appear in bikes ready-made for the mass market. Suddenly, it seemed like ebikes were popping up everywhere. One day, an ebike arrived for review at the publication I worked for that seemed to put all the pieces into the places I’d put them: a battery that fit cleanly into the frame itself, the motor in the rear hub and a cohesive set of electronics that included automatic power cutoff when the brakes were applied. There were several “assist” levels while pedaling, and a thumb throttle on the handlebars for freewheeling when even pedaling was too arduous (or I was feeling a bit lazy). The rear motor was also rated at 350 watts - about 0.5 horsepower - which was a pretty solid push at the time. I rode the bike for a few weeks and even crashed it quite severely, although I ended up much more injured than the bicycle. It also worked just fine as a regular (albeit heavy) regular bicycle. Overall I was impressed, so much so that I bought one after the review was published. That bike was the original Espin Sport. I still ride it to this day - and nearly every day at that. Over 2,500 miles later, it’s held up well. But, that was then. ... "
" ... Mobility: This term used to be about technologies for getting people around who had lost the ability to do so by themselves, such as wheelchairs and Rascal scooters. Now, "mobility" more refers to an expanded, holistic set of technologies that allow anyone to get anywhere (without walking), but the focus has somewhat shifted to smaller-scale electrified devices like ebikes, Segways, pay-to-ride scooters and other emerging get-around tech. ... " ... Powering the whole works is a massive 72-volt 48Ah 60 amp-capable Panasonic battery pack that dwarfs what you find on most “normal” ebikes. It’s cleanly tucked into the main frame behind two panels and is not generally user accessible. The rear motor tops out at 5kW of output under duress, but mainly runs at 3,000 watts max until called upon for more juice to spin up the 19-inch motorcyclish wheels and tires. The progressive twist throttle works within five power output levels selected on a pod on the left bar. As noted, Level 2 (quickly) tops out at 20mph. There’s three more to go after that. ... "
" ... Under power, the Charge City exhibits the same positives that most ebikes bring to riding: Faster speeds for the same amount of effort, real hill-flattening power and just a more fun and exciting riding experience. I’ll repeat: Any ebike with a thumb throttle is essentially a low-powered motorcycle that looks like a bicycle. As a life-long motorcycle rider, I’ll reiterate the reason most people ride: Because it’s fun. It’s really that simple. A motorized bicycle is more fun, plain and simple. And more useful. I used the Charge to make quick runs to the store and do other errands in Portland. I had no problems and it was a fun, capable bike to ride. ... "
" ... While I applaud Harley's broader vision and More Roads mentality, I am sure they are not ignorant of the fact that competition in ebikes is already here and more is coming, from Japan, China, Europe and just about anywhere motors and batteries can meld with bicycles. Harley makes great motorcycles, I've ridden many of them over the years. But they'll need their best and perhaps most atypical effort to get riders on Harley bicycles - and instill in them the joy of riding that keeps them coming back, hopefully for those big shiny machines that might be in those ebike riders' distant dreams, for now. ...
