" ... 12. Don’t skimp. The fact that your living space is tight doesn’t mean you have to skimp on the decor. Feel free to include some bold art or use some splashy colors. Making every accessory tiny creates a dollhouse look but doesn’t necessarily make the space look bigger, while large-scale art can actually make the walls seem to float away more. ... "
" ... All of McCarthy’s detailed accumulations, aggregations and installations trigger a comparison to the self-reflective, semi-autobiographical work of the late Jason Rhoades. However, Rhoades’s installations of store-bought goods were hyper-masculine fantasies, usually realized on a large, if not monumental, scale. " ... Spawn of the ring franchise, the sacred Riana also returned this week with her creepy doll to fight for a spot in the live shows. She walks over to the judges and places her doll in Mel B’s lap despite the judge’s protestations. Riana then returned to the stage and opened a door to a creepy little dollhouse on the stage and pulls out a candle. She puts the candle back in the house and it somehow lights. She then showed the entire audience a book with empty pages and then writes “do you want to play” on the cover. She places that book inside the house and closes the door, shaking her head until a bell rings. This prompts her to open the door and remove the book whose pages are now filled with bloody handprints and on the last page, it reads “I want to play with Mel B” in crayon. This scares Mel B so much she tries to foist the doll onto Howie who won’t take it. Riana takes the doll and puts it inside the house. As she circles, the house she says “come on, lets play, let’s play with our new friend.” A beat passes and then the house explodes, a full-size human who looks exactly like Riana emerges from the house, exploding it and scaring Mel B so much she runs off to her dressing room. Obviously, this bone-chilling performance earned Riana a well-deserved place in the live shows. ... "
" ... Swoon, whose work The House Our Families Built will be installed in Union Square in New York City this weekend, has deep roots in the United States. Her family has been here for generations. In her project, a sort of life-sized, sugar-spun dollhouse balanced on the cab of a white truck, Swoon has built a sort of home for the American identity reeling from generations of trauma and systemic racism. Populated by sculptural and architectural elements including a sofa, a staircase, a bookshelf, and cutouts of people engaged in various tasks — cooking, kissing a child, playing a game of chess — the structure is activated by daily performances that Swoon developed with Jeff Stark and Irene Lazaridis. The performances, which last for 15 minutes, are actual submissions from real people for American Portraits. The actors perform verbatim what was said in the submissions, and then projected through loudspeakers attached to the installation. They weave personal stories from Swoon’s own life with stories collected by PBS’s American Portrait project. ... "
