They even made it onto CD in 1988, but this is the first I have ever seen or heard of them. Kim’s concerto opens with a Rheingold/Beethoven 9th “curtain of sound” (Kim) or “dim, auroral stirrings” (Nicholas Bromell) and then works its way through a vast variety of moods in its one long movement, some very discernably modern, some rather lush, always consonant, and very often conventionally beautiful. The Californian Kim (of Korean parents) wrote a concerto well worth Perlman’s championing and must surely rank among the better American violin concertos. Robert Starer’s concerto sounds more traditional, angular 20th century romanticism that I could easily misplace in Eastern Europe of the time, too. How strange classical music and tastes are: If a composer has his violin concerto premiered and recorded by Itzhak Perlman and his Cello Concerto by Janos Starker, you’d think he’d be at the top of his game and yet who has ever heard of either of these two? Maybe not great stuff, but the sort of thing to be grateful for. ... "
