I have been personally involved for more than a decade with various efforts around communicating information on climate change to the public and especially how to correct misconceptions regarding certain aspects of environmental change and its impact on human health and life. Unfortunately, too many of the scientists I have worked with have argued that all you have to do is tweet out a link to a 50-page scientific paper with lots of complex math and figures that definitively demonstrates some complex scientific phenomena and magically everyone in the world will get on board with climate change. Some have at least recognized the need to translate complex scientific ideas to a colloquial audience, but even they all too often believe that by simply telling people they are wrong and putting the scientific facts out there that everyone will simply change. On the contrary, the bottom line is that numbers tend not to matter in the court of public opinion - mountains of scientific evidence and hard observational numbers might seem as if they will instantly sway everyone who encounters them, but the reality is that if someone disbelieves in climate change, telling them they are stupid and handing them a spreadsheet of numbers you claim prove this is unlikely to bring them to your way of thinking. ...
