" ... Conversely, Army of the Dead is a polished and confident blast. It works as a zombie shoot-em-up but primarily concentrates on being an ensemble heist flick (about folks breaking into a zombie-invested Las Vegas to steal $200 million) led by an always-engrossing Dave Bautista. You get your fill of R-rated carnage and visually dynamic action. You also get some bemusing in-jokes (Garret Dillahunt's concerns about a zombie tiger implies that the tiger saw Burning Bright), meta-riffs (Omari Hardwick cheerfully acknowledges that the set-up feels cribbed from Inception) and hat-tips (Snyder shot the film himself, but Larry Fong gets his due). Moreover, the cast (including a retroactively inserted Tig Notaro) is both offhandedly diverse and appropriately eclectic. The 148-minute movie takes its time, making us care about the characters before the body count kicks into gear. Aside from some unnecessary franchise-building, it’s precisely the kind of "line drive to center field" winner that Netflix has been promising from its original movies since 2015. ... "
" ... F. Gary Gray’s Men in Black: International starred Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Still, most audiences just chose to watch Men In Black (or Thor: Ragnarok) again. Elizabeth Banks’ Charlie’s Angels was more inclusive and more progressive than the McG flicks. I liked it well enough, I’d happily see Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska in a sequel, but audiences didn’t care. They didn’t ask for another Charlie’s Angels, and this soft reboot was the same movie with new “stars.” Tim Miller and James Cameron’s Terminator: Dark Fate cribbed the Star Wars: The Force Awakens formula (young, diverse protagonists with franchise vets acting as elders amid a loose remake of the first film). However, audiences had been burned by two awful Terminator relaunches. ... "
" ... I would have liked more character interaction among the supporting players, as it’s at its best when the women are just talking to each other. Ocean’s 8 is almost entirely procedural. This is one flick that may have benefited from a longer running time. But what you get is fun, and the screenplay doesn’t treat the idea of an all-female gang as anything noteworthy or special. There are enough story beats lightly cribbed from Ocean’s 11 to occasionally remind you of the brand, but this is a mostly stand-alone and nostalgia-free franchise reboot. Kudos for keeping “Batman” out of the “Wonder Woman” movie. ... "
" ... Trump’s White House has a knack for not learning Asia’s lessons. First, he cribbed from the post-Ferdinand-Marcos-era Philippines by morphing his administration into a for-personal-profit machine. His cronyism even extends to having his kids work in the West Wing. ... "
" ... What are you going to watch that new season of Ted Lasso on? Your old Apple TV? No, you want the updated 4K model with the A12 chip (the fastest chip ever in an Apple TV) and the redesigned Siri Remote. The remote alone is worth putting down $179 (or $199 for double the onboard storage). Rather than the frustrating current remote that you always try to use upside down, this version has a jog wheel at the top. Think of it like your old trusty iPod but with even more utility. It also has a side-button for Siri activation, something that Apple has cribbed from Roku's remotes and that I highly approve of, functionality-wise. ... "
