" ... I can think of at least three possible reasons for why finance became more profitable. The first being just that China turned up and manufacturing was now something done more cheaply elsewhere. The second would be computerisation: perhaps it had a greater effect on finance than it did manufacturing? The third is Maslow's Heirarchy. This is closely connected to the economic idea of inferior, normal and superior goods. An inferior good is one we spend less on as our income rises. A normal one we spend the same portion of our income and a superior one we spend more of our now larger income upon as we do get richer. Just about everything is all three of those at some or other income level. We're all very much richer than our grandparents were a century ago and we spend perhaps 10% of our incomes on food, they spent more like 30 to 40%. Food is therefore an inferior good over that income range. Perhaps finance is a superior good? It would be very surprising indeed if it weren't at some income range or other. Once we've got the food and clothes sorted out, perhaps we do spend more of our rising incomes on matters financial? Pensions savings, life insurance and so on (and yes, they're included in this definition of finance)? ... "
