" ... The picturesque town of Sambuca in deep Sicily is preparing to place on the market new homes for less than the cost of a cappuccino. A second lot of abandoned houses, roughly 18, will be sold at the symbolic price of €2. Town authorities are currently selecting which buildings will be involved in the scheme, according to sources. The aim is to launch the sale ahead of summer when the COVID outlook will hopefully be rosier and global travel resumes, allowing interested buyers to come see the dwellings and visit the area. As opposed to many other depopulating towns who have come up with similar clever housing deals to lure newcomers and revamp the local economy, Sambuca’s authorities own the abandoned crumbly dwellings so there’s no need to liaise with old owners, who have long left the town. Following the successful sale in 2019 of 16 crumbly bargain dwellings for the symbolic prize of €1 town authorities are now ready for a second round. They’re eager to dispose of another set of buildings located in the old Saracen districts of the fascinating historical centre featuring the ruins of an emir’s palace and Arab-sounding alley names. Sambuca made global headlines two years ago when it decided to offer at bargain prices picturesque empty houses which were abandoned after the terrible 1968 earthquake rocked the Belice Valley sending many locals running for their lives. The €1 houses went viral, causing a property stampede in a usually silent and off-the-radar spot. Tourists rushed to see the properties, hoping to be the first ones to snatch a cozy little palazzo with panoramic view over sheep-grazing fields. And they fell in love with Sambuca’s exotic vibe. The city hall was flooded by thousands of requests from interested buyers, prompting authorities to auction the available properties to the highest bidders. Eventually the houses were sold at prices ranging between €1 and €25.000. Following the global appeal of Sambuca and the growing demand of dwellings coming from abroad, local authorities have since been working on the disposal of a second lot of houses but were forced to press pause due to the outbreak of the pandemic. As Italy is still fighting against COVID the precise timing of the new sale has yet to be defined. ... "
