" ... "I grew up in Taiwan as the daughter of a calligrapher. Some of my earliest and most treasured memories are of my mother showing me the beauty, shape and form of Chinese characters. Ever since then I have been deeply fascinated by the structure of this incredible language," says ShaoLan. "Twelve years ago I moved to England and enrolled at Cambridge University. Two years later, I had one degree and two children. As I settled into my new life, I observed how in vogue China was and how eagerly people wanted to embrace the culture – yet they struggled with the language. Even my own children found it daunting. That’s when I started to think about how a new, simpler method for reading Chinese might be useful. By day I worked as an Internet entrepreneur and venture capitalist and by night I was consumed with creating a system to make learning Chinese easy." ... "

It was so simple to use just a few low-tech things: one roll of tape, one spray and one canvas. The point was to be minimalist, but to make the biggest works with practically nothing, and also because I was poor.” That simplicity is still evident in his practice today, working with paper or rice starch tape, large wooden stamps, cutters, rollers, lacquer, ink, acrylic and spray paint. He paints over canvases that have been composed with strips of tape, which when removed, reveal his stylized signature based on vertical and horizontal lines. Resistant, highly adhesive and easy to cut, gaffer tape is his material of predilection for floors and walls, as it is used on movie sets and an accessory with which he grew up. ... "
" ... “Traditional rental companies are hard to navigate, they lack curation and many have minimums that are hard to meet for smaller gatherings,” says Latham. “So what many folks end up doing is running around to a bunch of different places to buy a ton of stuff that they don’t really need so that everything will feel coordinated. They have to separately visit the florist for flowers, find a designer and printer or calligrapher for menus and place cards, hunt down games and balloons and so on.” They put their heads together and devised a rental service to offer artful decor at a fraction of the cost that could be ordered in minutes: a Rent the Runway concept if you will. So you can show off to your friends in real life and on social media how great your party planning skills are. Plus, Social Studies minimizes waste. They wash and reuse the napkins, dishes and cutlery, repack it and on it goes to the next person. ... "
