" ... Alison Bechdel's comic strip that I read when it was anthologized in book. Similar to the Nan Goldin experience, it was one of my early discoveries when I first moved to Montreal. This is the arrogance of youth, you think you invented it. I was shocked to read her stories and think to myself, "God, she was writing these in the '80s and '90s and her community of characters looked a lot like the community of characters that I was living in the early aughts." So to see these women talking about feminism and she was talking about racism and she was talking about community building, fertility, homophobia, the government, the responsibility of community, politics and activism. And she was writing these comics decades before I was reading them. I was sort of heartened, thinking, "Okay, I found a voice, a mirror for myself to see my community and myself reflected in." And then I also was going, "Are you f**king kidding me? We're still talking about these same things. How can we not have progressed more?" That just whipped me into a fury at that time. I'm just a fan of Alison Bechdel in general. Her memoir, Fun Home, is incredible. Her follow up, Are You My Mother?, revolutionary. Her Broadway show, Fun Home, sat in the crowd and weeped watching it. She is totally a visionary and amazing. And she is just herself. I love that she is like, "I am a dyke, that's who I am." She is a hero for me. ... "
