All this makes it the more impressive that David Lynch’s return to the world of Twin Peaks for an 18 hour odyssey into the darkest depths of the human psyche was, without question, the cinematic event of 2017. Hell, it was probably the art event, or just plain creative event, of the decade. The series worked as a show, and I watched it week to week as Showtime released them. And it also works as a film, as my dad and I watched the entire thing over two days on Thanksgiving break. Most surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly), it also functions as an art piece. Everything great about David Lynch was there. The horror, the grotesque, the violence, the sensuality, the surrealism. There were times when the show recalled the black comedy of Hal Ashby, and times when the show resembled an all out body horror in the vein of Cronenberg or Shinya Tsukyamoto. But if I go back to the 8th episode in particular, I see this as the greatest creative coup of this decade. That episode, which aestheticized the birth of demonic spirit Bob in the fiery, viscous abyss of a mushroom cloud, evoked the work of everyone from Stanley Kubrick to experimental filmmakers like Stan Brakhage and Janie Geiser. And this was a Showtime show! Lynch forced a major cable network to play repeat viewings of some truly terrifying video art! I can’t think of a greater accomplishment from any artist this year. ... "
